My latest composition Reflections and Lore is nearing completion. When I learned that conductor and bassist Tom Hildreth would be available for the concert I immediately added bass, augmenting the instrumentation to string quintet plus piano. It seemed only natural to add a pizzicato bass solo, which prompted me to add other solos for violin, cello, viola, and piano. The piece has evolved into a series of reflections alternating with sections focusing on the narrative of the folklore associated with the Firebird legends. As such, it is an episodic work, featuring a series of short segments based on either the Firebird statue itself, or a variety of the lore associated with the Firebird legend. The premiere will take place at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC on January 25, 2015 at 6 p.m. with a repeat performance at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC on February 1, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.. The concert will also feature new works based on the Firebird by Charlotte area composers Leonard Mark Lewis, Craig Bove, and John Allemeier. The concert will feature performers from from the Bechtler Ensemble joined by pianist and founder of the Out of Bounds Ensemble Tomoko Deguchi. Conductor Alan Yamamoto will lead the ensemble in this second annual concert of the Charlotte Composers Forum.
