My latest work for chamber ensemble is set for its premiere in January 2016 in Charlotte, NC.. Park Guell is based on the park of the same name in Barcelona Spain. It was designed by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi and was originally conceived as a select garden city and was later made into a public park. It is unlike any place I have ever seen. The lines between nature and man-made features are blurred. Pillars shaped like trees sprout from the ground at odd angels. Buildings seem to grow from the ground. Surfaces are adorned with elaborate tile patterns. It is in a word… Gaudi. Park Guell, scored for violin, viola, cello, marimba, and harp, is my take on the odd, off-center, and elaborately ornate decor that dominate Park Guell. The music is consistently off center metrically and harmonically. Patterns emerge and accumulate much like the features in Park Guell.
