Evans Essence was originally a jazz lead sheet I composed for guitarist LH Dickert. I later realized the lead sheet for solo piano for my sister-in-law, Masako Deguchi and her new husband Akihiko on the occasion of their wedding. It was performed by Tomoko Deguchi, sister of the bride, as part of the wedding ceremony. Tomoko later performed the piano version at Winthrop University as part of our music faculty recital series where my friend Jill O’Neill heard it and asked for a piano and flute version of Evans Essence. The result is an extended version featuring both flute and piano at different times in the piece. Although it clearly has jazz improvisation influence and feel, it is entirely through composed. I have posted the score to my scores page and will upload a rendering soon and a recording as soon as one is available. I enjoyed getting back to my jazz/fusion roots and plan a series of through composed versions of more of my jazz lead sheets.
