My composition for piano and interactive computer processing (MaxMSP), Afterimage 4, will be performed Monday, December 5, 2016 at Virginia Tech University.The performance will feature pianist Tomoko Deguchi. Afterimage 4 was the first piece I composed after finishing my Ph.D. at the University at Buffalo in 2001. After several performances I withdrew the work. While I was happy with the slowly evolving piano part, I was never quite satisfied with the computer processing. After many years the opportunity finally appeared to revisit the computer processing of Afterimage 4. This revised version features DSP techniques I have developed in the intervening years since the premier of Afterimage 4. This latest and final version of Afterimage 4 features my approach to process and harmony from 2001 combined with my most recent approaches to real time DSP processing using MaxMSP.
